Zagora and M'hamid el ghizlan

Introduction

When I was in Morocco, I spent a lot of time riding camels through the desert. It was an experience like no other. For some, it's not the most exciting activity in Morocco, but if you're looking to get off the tourist track and experience real Morocco then this is definitely worth doing.

ride camels through desert dunes with locals

You’re in the middle of a desert, and you want to ride camels through dunes. But what do you call these things?

In order to answer this question, let's first look at the characteristics of deserts:

  • Deserts are not mountains or hills, because they're made up of sand and not rock. They don't have any trees or plants growing on them either!

Have a tajine cooked by local berbers

When you visit the Moroccan countryside, it's a good idea to ask your hosts for a tajine. A traditional Moroccan stew, it's made in a clay pot and served with bread. The dish can be made with meat, fish or even vegetables—but all versions include lamb (especially if you're visiting around Eid).

Tajines are often cooked on holidays such as Ramadan or Christmas; they're also used as gifts during weddings.

camp in the Sahara desert under the stars

Camping in the Sahara desert is a unique experience. You can see stars at night, and you can also see the sun rise and set. It's a chance to see the Milky Way, which is a beautiful sight!

You'll also be able to catch shooting stars while you're out there—you'll never know when they might appear!

watch how the sun rises and sets on the vast land of the Sahara desert

We will start with the sun. In the Sahara desert, it rises and sets in the same place every day, just as it does on a clear night in any other part of the world. But what makes this place so special is that there are no trees or hills to block its rays from reaching us. The result is that we can see an amazing sight: The sun rising over vast sand dunes where no one has ever walked before!

The sunset here is also magical; we see clouds reflected off those same dunes, like little lakes of color floating across them like boats in watery territory—and then suddenly they dissolve into darkness again as though they had never been there at all! This effect happens when light travels through air molecules which have just been heated up by our atmosphere; thus everything appears more pinkish/redder than usual because these molecules absorb some wavelengths while reflecting others back toward us (this happens especially when viewing from above).

There is no better way to experience Morocco than the time honoured tradition of camel riding in the Sahara Desert.

The Sahara Desert is the world's largest hot desert and covers most of northern Africa. It extends from Mauritania in the west to Sudan in the east, passing through Algeria, Tunisia and Libya before reaching Southern Egypt at its southernmost point: Assiut City.[1] The total area covered by this vast desert ranges between 3 million square kilometres[2] to 5 million square kilometres[3] depending on who you ask!

Conclusion

I recommend this experience to anyone who is looking for a unique way to see Morocco.
